Did you know that before your child learns to read a book, he or she needs to have a love for reading? From my personal experience, my sons enjoyed when I read books to them, so the process of teaching them to read was more like fun to them rather than a chore. Here are 3 practices that will help your baby love reading.
1. Read to your baby early. The earlier you begin reading to your baby, the better. If you are currently pregnant, begin now. If your baby is a newborn, begin now. If your baby is a toddler, begin now. No matter the stage, get started. It may seem silly, but trust me, your baby hears you. You are helping your baby learn your voice, develop intellectually, build vocabulary, and develop a connection with you. All of these are wins for you and your child. I began talking and reading to my sons while they were in my womb, and I noticed they seemed alert when I spoke to them.
2. Read to your baby every day. Developing healthy habits, whether it’s eating right or exercising, takes consistency. Reading to your baby is no different. Select a designated time each day and spend 15 minutes with your baby. It’s okay if he or she falls asleep or becomes fussy during the scheduled time. Choose another time and keep reading every day.
3. Read age-appropriate books to your baby. Soft baby books, board books and picture books are good choices to read to your little one. They are colorful, eye-catching, and can be read to the end within 15 minutes or less. Soft baby books and board books are more durable for drooling and chewing. 😅
Make reading a family tradition! Encourage your significant other to join in and read with you or share the responsibility of reading to your baby daily.
Happy Reading!
